Glasgow and Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Charles Rennie Mackintosh is universally acknowledged to have been one of the most important figures in modern architecture and interior design. Mackintosh’s architectural work falls into three main categories – public buildings, private houses and tea rooms.

Many of the buildings created by Mackintosh survive to this day. In Glasgow you can visit his famous School of Art, which is located in the City Centre; Scotland Street School, now a museum, which can be reached easily by Underground and the Glasgow Herald Building, which is now the Lighthouse Museum, located just off Buchanan Street. To discover more about his interior design styles you can visit The Mackintosh House, which is part of the Hunterian Art Gallery at Glasgow University. This reconstruction brings to life Mackintosh’s own home and features decorative schemes which compliment the furniture, which is to his own design.
